Attorney J. Keith Givens has been inducted as an outstanding supportive member of The Melvin M. Belli Society. Founded in 1979, The Melvin M. Belli Society was established for the purpose of furthering the study of lawby charitable and educational means through funding scholarly research and lectures, gifts, endowments and teaching. One of the great lawyers of the 20th Century, Melvin Belli was called the Father of Demonstrative Evidence for his pioneering work of illustrating in court the nature of his client’s injuries with the dramatic use of photographs, movies, scale models and human skeletons.
A national shareholder with The Cochran Firm, Mr. Givens has been a civil trial lawyer for consumers and injury victims for over twenty-nine years. He was a finalist for the 2008 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award, as recognized by the Public Justice Foundation for his work on the environmental case of Perrine v. E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company. The trial of the Perrine case resulted in a $390 million verdict, the highest consumer verdict in the U.S. for the year. In 2002, Mr. Givens obtained the state of Alabama’s highest verdict for a single wrongful death ($25 million) against a drunk driver and lounge for the death of a lawyer killed while jogging. Mr. Givens was also the attorney for plaintiffs in a $700 million settlement of an environmental case involving PCB, the largest settlement in the historyof the state of Alabama.
Past president of The National Trial Lawyers legal association, Mr. Givens is currently an Executive Committee Member of The National Trial Lawyers and a member of the Editorial Board for The Trial Lawyer, the largest distributed magazine for Trial Lawyers.
